Referencing

Referencing styles used at BCU

“Harvard” is not one style. Institutions and individual schools publish their own variants, and markers notice when punctuation, ordering or the handling of online sources drifts. These are the styles BCU students most often bring us — send your school’s guide with the brief and we format to it from the first draft.

  • BCU Harvard

Formatted to your school’s published guide, with every citation traceable to a source you can open yourself.

  • APA 7th

Formatted to your school’s published guide, with every citation traceable to a source you can open yourself.

  • OSCOLA (law)

Formatted to your school’s published guide, with every citation traceable to a source you can open yourself.

Marking conventions

How marking works here

BCU marks in percentages against the standard UK classification bands, with module specifications setting out learning outcomes, assessment weightings and the criteria markers apply. Its applied focus shows in what the criteria reward: application to professional context, appropriate use of evidence and communication suited to a defined audience, alongside academic argument. Conservatoire, art and design and media programmes are assessed through performance, portfolio and critique, which carry their own descriptors and cannot be addressed by written support. Written work is submitted with similarity checking enabled, feedback maps back to the published criteria, and the university's academic regulations cover extensions, mitigating circumstances and the capping of reassessed components.

Whatever the scale, the practical move is the same: get hold of the criteria grid before you write. Your expert plans the work against it criterion by criterion, writes it from scratch, and annotates it with a marker’s note explaining which paragraph is doing which job.

Timing

Peak deadline periods at BCU

Deadlines do not arrive evenly. These are the weeks when BCU submissions bunch up — and when every other student in your cohort is asking for the same help at the same time.

Book a slot early
  1. Early to mid-January

semester one coursework and the January assessment period

  2. Late April to May

semester two coursework and end-of-year assessment

  3. August to September

    resits and postgraduate dissertation submission

  4. Book early — it is free to do so

Quotes cost nothing and nothing starts until you approve your expert, so there is no downside to reserving a slot two or three weeks out. Practically, an earlier start buys you a plan review, a draft review and time to actually learn from the work — the three things a 48-hour turnaround cannot give you at any price.

Questions

BCU students ask us

The three questions that come up most from Birmingham City University. Anything else, our academic co-ordinators reply in person — 24/7, 365 days a year.

Ask us anything
Can you help with a Conservatoire or performance module?

Only with the written and research components — programme notes, contextual research, reflective commentary, dissertation chapters. Performance and portfolio assessment is your own work by definition, and we would decline anything that pretended otherwise.

My module specification lists learning outcomes rather than a rubric. Is that enough to work from?

Yes. Learning outcomes tell us what the assessment must demonstrate, and your expert writes the work so each outcome is visibly evidenced, then notes where in the text it is satisfied. Send the assessment brief as well if you have it.

I am an international student writing my first UK assignment. What is different?

Mostly the expectations around criticality and referencing: UK markers want sources interrogated rather than reported, and citation accuracy is treated as part of the argument. We pair a fully worked, expert-written answer with a 1-to-1 session that makes that shift concrete.
